The U.K. is a world leader in its standard of Chiropractic education. All U.K. Chiropractors have completed a 4-5 year Masters Degree program and ongoing 'continual professional development'. Similar to general practice, all Doctors of Chiropractic have to be registered by a national regulatory body called the General Chiropractic Council (GCC); which was set up by Parliament in 1994. They also have to be members of a professional body, such as the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). Like G.P's, Chiropractors are trained to diagnose illness. So if a patient has a condition that can't be treated by chiropractic, such as pain from an infection, the Chiropractor will be able to diagnose this and send the patient to their G.P. for appropriate medication. Chiropractors use postural, neurological, orthopaedic and chiropractic tests in addition to systems examinations (e.g. cardiovascular), palpation (feeling for joint movement and muscle tightness) and a variety of other types of examination to inform their diagnosis. Chiropractors spend much of their 4-5 years of training at university studying anatomy, physiology and the science of how the body works. They are also trained in radiology and radiography (the taking and reading of x-rays and other imaging techniques). This makes them possibly the only profession in the country where the basic training is designed to empower the professional with the skill and knowledge to read an x-ray and make informed decisions as to how the results may impact on both what physical therapy is suitable for the patient and how the x-ray results might alter the expected outcome of physical therapy. This insight is gained by being the examiner, the radiologist (often) and the physical therapist. Chiropractors have the one of the largest skill bases of any of the physical therapy professions. Treatments can involve one or several of the following techniques which are explained in detail on the treatment page: Chiropractic has evolved as a profession over the past century incorporating advances in our scientific understanding of the human body, the mechanisms of injury, pain and recovery. Chiropractic underpins all its treatment with a sound basis in proven, evidence-based, accepted techniques and sound clinical reasoning.
